We often talk about health and wellness as if they’re things that just happen to us. Some people are “lucky” with good health, while others seem to be constantly struggling. But here’s the truth: wellness is not an accident. It’s not random, and it’s not something that simply shows up at our doorstep one morning. Wellness is a choice—a series of choices—that we make every single day.

The Myth of Luck

It’s easy to look at someone who seems vibrant, energetic, and at peace with themselves and think, they must have great genes or they’re just naturally like that. Genetics certainly play a role, but they are only part of the picture. For most of us, it’s not luck—it’s intention. Behind that vitality is usually a pattern of daily decisions: choosing real food over ultra-processed options, taking the walk instead of another hour on the couch, pausing to breathe rather than letting stress spiral.

When we dismiss wellness as luck, we give away our power. We tell ourselves we don’t have control, when in reality, the choices we make create the lives we live.

The Investment Mindset

Think of wellness as an investment. Every small action is a deposit into your health account. Drinking a glass of water instead of a sugary soda is a deposit. Turning off your phone an hour before bed to get deep rest is a deposit. Choosing connection—time with loved ones, a call to a friend—when you feel isolated is a deposit.

Like money, those deposits compound. One choice might feel insignificant in the moment, but repeated over weeks, months, and years, the return is profound. The opposite is also true: ignoring our bodies, neglecting our rest, pushing aside our mental and spiritual wellbeing—those are withdrawals. If we keep withdrawing without depositing, eventually the account runs dry.

Wellness Is Not Passive

Here’s the part that makes people uncomfortable: you can’t drift your way into wellness. It requires participation. Wellness asks you to be awake, intentional, and willing to step into discomfort at times. It’s much easier to grab fast food than to chop vegetables. It’s easier to scroll through your phone than to meditate. It’s easier to pour another coffee than to admit you need rest.

But easy choices often steal from tomorrow. Harder choices, the ones that require intention, are the ones that build a stronger, more resilient you.

Reframing the Question

Instead of asking “Do I have time for wellness?” the better question is “What will happen if I don’t?”
Instead of saying “I’ll get healthy when life slows down,” try “How can I bring health into my life right now, in this season?”

Wellness is not something you wait for. It’s something you create.

The Ripple Effect

When you choose wellness, you don’t just change your own life—you influence everyone around you. Your children, your friends, your colleagues all notice the energy you bring. They see what’s possible. Your investment in yourself becomes a gift to others.

A Call to Action

So today, consider this: wellness is not an accident. It’s a choice. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up for yourself, consistently, in small and powerful ways.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s one small deposit I can make into my wellness account today?
  • How can I choose intention over accident in this moment?

Because the truth is, wellness doesn’t just happen. You make it happen. And the choices you make today are the building blocks of the life you’ll live tomorrow.
