What Really is Epigenetics?

Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence. These changes can be influenced by environmental factors such as diet, stress, and exposure to toxins. In recent years, research has shown that epigenetic changes can have a significant impact on our health.

Epigenetic changes can occur throughout our lives, and they can influence our health in many ways. For example, they can affect our susceptibility to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. They can also affect our mental health and our ability to respond to stress.

One way that epigenetic changes can impact our health is by altering the way that our genes are expressed. Some genes may become more active, while others may become less active. This can affect the production of proteins and other molecules that are necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies.

For example, epigenetic changes can affect the expression of genes that are involved in the regulation of inflammation. Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection, but when it becomes chronic, it can contribute to a wide range of diseases, including arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. Epigenetic changes can alter the expression of genes that control inflammation, leading to chronic inflammation and an increased risk of these diseases.

Epigenetic changes can also affect our metabolism, which can impact our risk of obesity and diabetes. For example, some epigenetic changes can alter the expression of genes that regulate the production of insulin, a hormone that is involved in the regulation of blood sugar levels. When these genes are altered, it can lead to a decreased ability to produce insulin, which can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In addition to affecting our physical health, epigenetic changes can also impact our mental health. For example, some epigenetic changes can alter the expression of genes that are involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters play a critical role in regulating our mood, and alterations in their levels can contribute to the development of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Overall, the study of epigenetics is revealing a complex interplay between our genes and the environment, and how this interplay can impact our health. While we cannot change our genes, we can take steps to reduce our exposure to environmental factors that can cause epigenetic changes, such as eating a healthy diet, reducing stress, and avoiding exposure to toxins. By doing so, we may be able to reduce our risk of developing a wide range of diseases and improve our overall health and wellbeing.

At Global Health we have next generation technology where we can assess your epigenetic markers and see what is influencing your health. This is so important in todays world where we are exposed to many different factors that influence your health.
