Your Sugar Intake
‘Everything in moderation’ is a commonly heard phrase. But just how much is a moderate quantity of sugar? And does this moderate quantity keep you healthy, without adverse health effects? The following questions can be a helpful starting point to ask yourself in finding out if you would like to make changes to your sugar intake…
- Do your energy levels drop in the afternoon?
- Do you feel the need something to consume something sweet after lunch or dinner?
- Does your stomach get bloated after eating?
- Are you unable to eat just one piece of cake and walk away?
- Do you put on weight around the middle, perhaps even slim everywhere else?
- Do you often feel mentally foggy? That you’re not always sharp and on-form?
- Do you want to lose weight?
If you have never considered your sugar consumption before, prepare to be shocked! Start taking a careful look at the labels of jars, tins and all packaged foods and write down the quantity of sugar per serving. Think about your daily diet, any sugar add to drinks, the types of food you regularly consume and sugars they contain. It all adds up.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that free sugars make up no more than 10% of your daily energy intake, ideally no more than 5% for additional health benefits.
